Oral and written in culture: Connections and collisions December 12–13, 2016, in Estonian Literary Museum, Tartu Annual conference of the CEES and annual 60th Kreutzwald Days conference

The conference will focus on the relationship of the oral and the written in the Estonian (or more broadly Baltic) culture up to the present times when written culture seems to govern the world in order to foster dialogue between different disciplinary approaches. Presentations deal with language, speech, and text in the crosswinds of their oral and written mediation and dissemination, the philosophical and ethic questions that accompany these processes, but also the interrelations of the written, visual and acoustical in culture.

Key note speakers:
Andris Levans, Das Wort ist mein Gesicht. Überlegungen zum Verhältnis von Mündlichkeit, Schriftlichkeit und Gedächtnis im mittelalterlichen Livland
Terry Gunnell, Performance and Audience, Time and Space, Sound and Vision. The Uses of the Performance Studies Approach for the Study of Folklore Past and Present
